Was there ever a time you lived, did, thought or felt anything outside of Now? Is it possible that something really happen or exist outside of Now?
Nothing ever happened in the past, everything happens in the moment of now. Nothing will ever happen in the future, everything happens in the moment of now.
What you consider as being past, in fact, it is an imprint of memory, stored in the mind, of an older moment of Now. When you remember the past, you reactivate its footprint – in the present moment. The future is a moment of Now, imagined, a projection of mind, and when it occurs, appears in the form of the Now. When you think about the future you are doing it right in this moment, in the moment of Now.
The past and the future don’t have their own reality. Just as the Moon doesn’t have its own light but is able to reflect sunlight, so are the past and the future, only faded reflections of the light, of the power and reality of eternal Now. They lend their reality from the Now Moment.
How we dive into the Now? Ending the old pattern of denial and resistance of the Now moment. Make a habit of withdrawing attention from past and future whenever it’s not necessary to think about it.
At first you may find hard to enter directly in the moment of Now, so you can start by observing the usual tendency of mind to want to escape from the moment of Now. You will notice that the future is usually imagined as being better or worse than the present moment. If imagined future is better than the present moment, this will give you hope and a pleasant sense of anticipation. But if it is worse, will create anxiety. Both are illusions.
Through self-observation, this condition of being present automatically enters your life. The moment you realize that you are not present you become present. Every time you will observe your mind, you are not caught in it anymore. Another factor appeared, something that does not belong to the mind: the observing presence. Be present as an observer of your mind, of your thoughts and emotions, and of the different reactions in different situations. Notice how often you are turning to the past or the future. Do not judge or analyze what you see, just watch the thought, feel the emotion, observe the reaction. Don’t make a personal problem of them. You will feel in that moment something more powerful than all the things you observe, you will feel the silent observer behind your mind, the silent observer.
In the state of normal consciousness, of identification with the mind, the power and the infinite creative potential that lie hidden in the moment of Now are totally camouflaged by the psychological time. In these conditions, your life loses its ability to vibrate, its freshness, the sense of awe and ecstasy. Old thoughts patterns of emotion, behavior, reaction and desire are played in representations which repeat endlessly in your mind a scenario that gives a kind of identity, but distort or hide the present reality. As a result, the mind creates an obsession with the future to escape from an unsatisfactory present.
What you perceive as being the future is actually an intrinsic part of the present state of consciousness. If your mind carries heavy burden of the past, you will repeat the same experiences living. The past is perpetuated in the absence of the present. The quality of your consciousness now is what will shape the future. The quality of consciousness is determined by the state of the presence. Thus, the only place where genuine change can occur and where the past can be dissolved is in the present moment.
Maybe you will find difficult to acknowledge that time is the cause of your suffering and your problems. You think they are caused by specific situations in your life and, from a point of view, this is true. But until you’ve solved the main problems of mental disorder (attachment with the past and future and denial of Now) the problems are actually interchangeable.
If all the problems or what you perceive as being the cause of your suffering or unhappiness would be miraculously removed today, but you would continue to be less present, less aware (as you used to be) you will soon find yourself with a similar set of problems or reasons of suffering, like a shadow that will follow you anywhere. Ultimately, there is one problem: the mind caught in time.
There is no rescue in time. You cannot be free in the future.
The key to freedom is being present, so only Now you can be free.
